5 simple ways to make your PC run faster and better

We all have been surfing the internet browser using our PC or laptop and sometimes it doesn’t work as fast as we want.

We have struggled to navigate fast from the fact that the PC runs slow and it gets stuck for couples of seconds/minutes and of course, that is pretty much annoying.

But, for every problem, there is a solution.

Here are 5 steps to make your PC or laptop to run faster and better.

1. Delete temporary files. %temp%
Temporary files are junk files stored in a part of local disk C: %temp” which you are able to delete them just to make your PC free of junk files and make it lighter to use with more memory on your hard drive.

To delete temporary files, you have to do the following steps:
a) Press ‘windows button’ + r to open run command from your start menu. Type %temp% and then press ok or enter.

b) You will see all the junk files stored there so the next step is to select them all and delete them.

c) After this is successfully done we have to do it once again, so we go again to run the command, type %temp% and delete those files once again.

2. Delete prefetch files
Prefetch files are great artefacts for forensic investigators trying to analyze applications that have been run on a system.

Windows creates a prefetch file when an application is run from a particular location for the very first time. This is used to help speed up the loading of applications.

For investigators, these files contain some valuable data on a user’s application history on a computer. But this files, of course, can be deleted to free our memory space and to make our PC run faster.

You can follow these steps:
a) Press ‘windows’ button + R, you must see the run command so you type: prefetch and then press ok.

b) After that you will see that it requires administrative rights to continue, press continue.

c)You will see all the prefetch files, select them all then delete them.

3. Disk Clean Up
This is a simple way of deleting unnecessary files from the local disk C :/. And you can simply do that by following these steps:

a) Go to start button on your left and type disk cleanup, if the icon is not found yet wait a few seconds, and when it shows up click and open it.

b) After you click on it you will make a choice of which disk to clean up so you go to local disk C.

c) Wait a few seconds as it analyzes files and dump files of the system and you will soon see some checkboxes to check which that would be the files that you have to delete. Select them all and go with ‘OK’.

d) Press yes to confirm your action.

4. Increasing Virtual RAM
So if you are a developer or just a simple user who uses a PC or laptop you must know what RAM is.

If you don’t know then here is a simple introduction of RAM:

RAM is a temporary memory who is used for better speed and more memory for caching.

In simple words, the purpose of RAM is to provide quick read and write access to a storage device.
Your computer uses RAM to load data because it’s much quicker than running that same data directly off of a hard drive.
The more RAM, easier is for you to surf the net.
So it happens that you might have the temporary memory 4 GB and you only use 2GB.
Steps to increase the virtual RAM and to have better accessibility:

a)Go to start button and click on My computer with your right button of mouse and press on properties.

b)After waiting some seconds, you will see a window where all your computer details are in there. Click on “Advanced System Properties”.

c)On ‘Performance’ click on settings and then go to Advanced again

d) Go to virtual memory to the second one and click change.

e) You will see a checkbox on top and uncheck it. Then you will be able to customize the size of the RAM used.

Put your initial size on Mb of your RAM and the maximum of it, and then click ‘OK’.

d)To activate it you must restart PC.

5. Managing Startup Applications and Processors

Here you can manage which application will open first as soon as the PC or laptop turns on.
You can check/uncheck any program or app that you want to add or remove from startup.

Also, you can change processor settings by making it use more processors that it is using. But you can do that if your processor is better than standards. Because if it’s 1 then it will only use 1. If it is 2 and in your system, it is 1 then you can change it on 2 to make it faster.

To do these kinds of changes, you must follow these steps:

a) Press ‘windows button ‘+ R at the same time and type ‘msconfig‘.

b) On startup, you can disable unwanted programs that starts soon after booting the PC. Disable unwanted programs as you want and go to Boot option.

c) Go to advanced options

d) Check on the checkbox of ‘Number of processors:’ and change it in more than 1 on the drop-down list below.

e) Do the same with the maximum memory and add it higher if it is possible.

f) After finishing with both of them uncheck the boxes and click ‘ok’.
